I received an email today from Tools of the Trade with some news updates, one of which in particular caught my eye: “World Famous Tool Collector Dies at Age 87”
Being in the business of German tool sales, I have amassed quite a few tools over time without the goal nor intent of being a collector, however, “collection” would sum up my selection of tools at home (as would “organized chaos” or perhaps “method to the madness”).
A tool collection takes on a whole new meaning once you read about the late Ken Hawley, 87. Mr. Hawley began collecting tools in 1950 when he was a tool salesman in England. Over his lifetime he collected over “…2,000 joiner’s planes, 1,000 table knives, 260 micrometers, 50 anvils, 4,000 catalogues and thousands of associated photos and documents related to the sale and manufacture of tools…”¹
Mr. Hawley’s tool collection grew so much that “they are now part of the Ken Hawley Collection at Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield, UK.” I have never been to England but it remains on my bucket list as does now visiting the Ken Hawley Collection at Kelham Island Museum if and when I get the chance to hop across the pond.
I’ve seen many collectors of some of the truck brands (Snap-On, etc.) and while impressive, they are different as they are more in the name of brand loyalty (which I can certainly appreciate). It is neat to see someone with such enthusiasm and dedication to preserving a wide-array of examples of craftsmanship and the knowledge that comes along with that for future generations.
I invite and encourage you to read the article I received from Tools of the Trade written by David Frane as well as watching the YouTube video of Mr. Hawley’s collection (uploaded 2012):

This inexpensive magnetizer / demagnetizer is a great addition to any toolbox. Used by technicians, mechanics, and handymen this 2″ x 2″ x 1.25″ tool is a light-weight convenient way of magnetizing or demagnetizing a screwdriver bit, blade, or tweezer able to pass through the magnetic fields.
The shatterproof box made from high quality plastic, shock-resistant, green, and is cadmium free. It uses 2 C8 industrial permanent magnets and is Made in Germany.
Here is what our customers have to say about this tool:
Lenny B: “That there was such a tool that could magnetize and demagnetize in one assembly! All I can say is WoW, OK!”
Brady Y: “Lightly magnetize with ease.”
Alexandr S: “I always wondered, why i have to make my own magnetizer for my screwdrivers, using a loudspeaker’s magnet :), and why there is no such simple, but incredible usable thing in our stores. Now this problem has been solved thanks to you, guys. I like this little green “brick” – it looks and feels in arms very solid and qualitatively, not like a cheap-chinese fake. Works like a charm – i didn’t know, that there is a such simple method to de-magnetize instrument, i always used for this an electromagnet with AC power sourse. The highly usable, “must-have” thing in my instrument set for every worker. Thank you very much!”
John V: “First one ever owned, dont know how i managed all these years without one.also bought one for my grandson 4yrs old he thinks its magic.”
P. Beavin: “Great product! Works very fast and the charge seems to stick. Highly recommended. Magnetizing the screwdriver certainly helps in handling the small screws used in repairing models.”
Nomnom: “I put off buying one of these for FAR too long. Now that I have, it is a staple on ANY repair job I do. And I mean any, big or small. Regardless of what tools a particular job needs, I always grab this as well. I can’t tell you how indispensable it is to be able to magnetize any tool I want in order to attract other metal parts, whether they be washers, screws, bolts, nuts, nails, fasteners, etc. A+ would buy again”

2 C8 Industrial Permanent Magnets
To magnetize and demagnetize steel screwdriver blades, tweezers and similar tools.
Shatterproof Box made from high quality plastic, shock-resistant, green, cadmium free.
Located 25 miles NE of KC Tool in downtown Kansas City is Harry J Epstein Co who focuses on Made in the USA tools. Epstein’s has been in business since 1930 and operates out of one of the coolest buildings I’ve ever been in. While I’m partial to German tools, I have found myself on more than one occasion aimlessly wandering around Epstein’s labyrinth of tools on a Saturday morning finding tools that I “need” for no reason other than “I’m sure it will come in handy someday.” So far I’ve been right!
Recently, Epstein’s began carrying the full line of current production SK Tools as mentioned here. The GarageJournal community, who have long been a fan of Epstein’s convinced them to have an “SK Day.” They will feature 5-20% off all SK Tools from September 23-24; please see the details on this thread on Garage Journal.
Growing up my father had a large collection of SK Tools and from a very early age I learned that these were quality tools and they’ve become one of my favorite brands (American or otherwise). I sold them during my tenure at another independent tool company in Kansas City and was impressed by SK’s consistency and wide selection of tools. It’s neat to see an American company doing well after having to declare bankruptcy June 2010 (SK was subsequently purchased by Ideal Industries in August 2010) and as Jori says, “…support for companies that try to operate in humane, sustainable way.”

KC Tool is excited to begin sharing the Highest Rated Tools as reviewed by our customers. These tools meet and exceed industry standards and are an example of the quality of the German brands we carry.
This driver is commonly used by electricians who need its insulating properties to safely work on live electrical cabinets. The Wiha 32015 is rated for AC 1000V and DC 1500V thus meeting IEC 60900:204 standards.
Here is what our customers have to say about this terminating (slotted) screwdriver:
D. Yeh: “If you for any reason would work on a circuit that has a possibility to get in contact with high voltage (or any voltage for that matter) this is the tool you need. Wiha is reputable tool maker and this insulated is the tool to get! Rated up to 1000V. The tool itself is well constructed. The quality of the steel is hard enough against the day-to-day beating. I have purchased a set of the screwdrivers and had to buy this individual one after I lost it in the field. I highly recommend to purchase it when there is a chance either for live circuits or just to prevent accidentally shorting another circuit”
J. Fillmore: “I’m not a fan of all Wiha’s tools, but their insulated screwdrivers are the best. I use this screwdriver for hot terminals when disconnecting wires. This screwdriver is a lot like the one Motion Control Engineering gives out with their controller packages. They seem to last about two years for me, I am very rough on my tools and tend to use this screwdriver for a lot of things that I’m not suppose to. But for Elevator guys, these things are great for terminals.”
Abe: “This is a great little control screwdriver, I never leave home without it! Inside a control panel it’s priceless. Handy tool!”
Rudy F: “Im an Insidewireman ( Electrician )I had one of these screw drivers for years the best terminating screwdriver you can buy i used it so much i finally wore it out I bought one here and some guys at work wanted one too ended up buying 14 if you need a great terminating screwdriver for controll cabinet work this is the one you need and its also a great trim out screwdriver for outlet and switch covers”
Paul M: “Excellent product and very good delivery time. I was searching for a replacement insulated terminating screwdriver and found my favorite brand for terminating screwdrivers at KC TOOL.”
